The European Union's food traceability framework is based on the General Food Law (Regulation EC 178/2002), which requires all food business operators to maintain one-step-forward, one-step-back traceability. The EU Farm to Fork Strategy aims to extend traceability requirements throughout the food supply chain by 2030.
General Food Law
Article 18 of the General Food Law requires food business operators to be able to identify from whom they received food, feed, food-producing animals, or any other substance intended to be incorporated into food. They must also be able to identify to whom their products have been supplied. This "one-up, one-down" traceability is the minimum requirement throughout the EU.
